ICE ICE Baby

Here's a good idea that turned up during the days after the London bombing. (which, you'll have noticed, I've been fairly silent about, it's not that I don't have an opinion, I've just felt that now isn't the right time to talk about things like why we're a target, and potentially criticising the political response. I'll wait for the dust to settle before I come to any judgements on this).

ICE stands for "In Case of Emergency". Basically, you create an entry in your mobile phone phonebook called "ICE". Under this name you enter the numbers of your next of kin, or other suitable person, to be contacted in case of an emergency where (for whatever reason) you're incapable of doing so yourself. The idea is that when you're rushed to A&E or wherever, the staff there can deal with contacting your nominated person(s) while you concentrate on not being dead.

The trouble with that is then when your nominated person calls, instead of saying "boyfriend" your phone says "ICE" unless you happen to have only next of kin who are alphabetically before I...

I should note that "boyfriend" would show up before ICE, if that were what I stored him under. It isn't.

Funny though, if I thought someone needed me to call their family, I'd look through their phonebook for - hmmm... Mum / Dad / Home?
