A day like today
At work today...
I went slightly crazy trying to get my head around various complex caculations apparenly incompatable with human thought processes, as they managed to confuse everyone I talked to about them. And it's all Chips fault.
On the way home from work today...
I fell asleep on the train. Like I do every day. The train rushed trough towns and countryside, and I didn't take any notice, due to being alseep.

Oy - I heard that!
You might wish to watch out for a big shouting match this morning as I try (again!) to explain things.
I hope your explaining got somewhere. From what I overhead, it sounds like you agreed to disagree until one of you was proven right by the end result.
Mr Early Departure was a lot happier, which I think was the main thing. What bugged me was the automatic assumption that I was wrong just because I hadn't talked to the team about stuff (perhaps I'd tried, but people were "too busy"). Like you said though, your bit isn't the end product.
I despair of ever being able to explain the difference between "spotting changes in fields that never change" and "spotting that an event has occurred that would have changed that field if we had an all-singing all-dancing admin system".
I'm happy with what I'm doing. If people want to bad-mouth me in private, fine. I know who'll be smiling last.
